Doin’ It In The Park: The Creative Journey - Episode 1
Great Idea. I can wait for the full doco to drop. Man I miss NYC!
"Doin' It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC" co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited 180 courts throughout NYC's five boroughs to make their debut documentary. They traveled to a majority of the locations by bicycle, carrying camera equipment and a ball in their backpacks. Their creative journey began many years before starting the self-funded project though, with a deep desire for playing as well as taking photographs in the world's Mecca for the outdoor sport. In this episode, the filmmakers share what led them to document all the innovation that exists in the "City Game," and the creativity that shines through the New Yorkers who religiously head to the schoolyard to call "Next!" Stay tuned for more episodes this summer revealing Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau's creative process in making what Henry Chalfant (Style Wars) calls "A perfect portrait of urban culture!"

A Photography Book About Vinyl Collectors - Dust & Grooves.
Dust & Grooves is a photo and interview project documenting and exalting vinyl records, the people who love them, and the musical heritage they carry.
With a website launched in October 2008 by Brooklyn-based professional photographer and vinyl addict Eilon Paz, D&G profiles individual collectors from all over the world in their natural environment – usually at home with their personal collections. Each subject is interviewed in depth about their devotion to vinyl, then each conversation is paired with a beautiful series of portrait photographs by Eilon that capture the heart and soul of this passionate avocation. Together, words and images tell the story of the love affair between collector and collection, and preserve a record of music that otherwise might be lost.
Dust and Grooves is such a fantastic website. It would be great to see this project get the money it deserves to go to print. Pledge anything over a buck and show your support over HERE

Sam Hillcoat "The Quiet Storm" Solo Exhibition
The Quiet Storm exhibition is a powerful new body of work by Brisbane tattoo and street artist, Sam Hillcoat.
The exhibition, Sam’s first solo show, features striking new works on canvas using oil, acrylics and aerosol. With several successful group shows under his belt and nonstop tattoo and canvas commissions, Sam has had to lock himself away and surrender much of this precious income to prepare his prolific new body of work.
Sam says he has adopted a fresh stylistic approach for this exhibition, “my new work is a hybrid of different styles. I like to take the raw expression of street art and the clandestine styles of modern and traditional tattoo design out of their natural environments. For the first time in years I have been able to flesh out all these ideas I have been developing, without having to meet anyone else’s expectations or specifications. I am excited to unveil this new style, which I feel is totally my own.”
In the last 10 years street art and tattooing has seen a surge in interest from the public and broader art world. While Sam has benefited professionally from this trend, this exhibition sees him moving away from the machine and spray can, and transforming his love of urban cultures into a fine art. Much of Sam’s new work is reminiscent of traditional Japanese art and tattoo (irezumi) with bold, colourful graffiti aesthetics. His duel occupations as a tattoo and aerosol artist have led him to developing this unique crossover style that is hugely appealing to fans of tattoo, street and contemporary fine art.
The Quiet Storm exhibition offers the pleasures of permanent ink, without the pain, the vibrancy of street art, without the legalities. It is an exhibition of exceptional artistry from a young, highly sought after tattoo and street artist with fresh, distinctive brushwork.
The Quiet Storm exhibition opens at Jugglers Art Space in Fortitude Valley on Friday 22 June from 6pm onwards, and closes on Saturday 23 June, 5pm.

It’s been many years in the brewing, now finally Brisbane underground hip hop legend Jake Biz’s debut album Commercial Hell is ready for the tasting. Riding off the back of his highly successful debut single, “Deuce Deuce”, Commercial Hell is set for national release on Karsniogenics through Obese Records Distribution on May 18, 2012.
Commercial Hell was produced by Jake Biz’s long time friend and fellow 750 Rebel Overproof Pete –aka Brookes Cullings and features valuable contributions by crew members and old mates including the legendary Lazy Grey, DJ Lopsided, Bigfoot, Tornts, Ken Oath and Fluent Form.
Commercial Hell is a self-‐assured rap album without pretense, born out of a love and knowledge of the rap classics of years gone by and the south side working class suburbs of Brisbane. It is the antithesis of every record attempting to cross into the mainstream and whilst it may appear quite a confrontational album upon first listen, it plays out as more a tongue (firmly planted) in cheek observation of Australia’s hip hop scene in its current state.
“The title track itself addresses the “Australian Idol” mentality of many local rappers who search for fame and acclaim without investing time and genuine passion into their craft,” explains Jake Biz. “It also blatantly hints at the role commercial radio has been playing in pushing these stereotypical “paint by numbers” MC’s while completely ignoring far more deserving veteran underground artists.” The production techniques of Overproof Pete seamlessly blend with the Biz’s vocal style in a combination born of many years shared experiences.
“Having known Peter for so long, growing up together and entering the rap game together, no one else could’ve provided and crafted the sonic landscape for my raps,” says Biz. “Having Proof produce the entire record was a no brainer. We both share similar views on life and the same general goal and vision for street level rap music coming out of this country.” Jake Biz is rightfully proud of his debut long player and the blood, sweat and biff that have gone into molding every aspect of the final work. “Weeks of deliberation went into the eventual track listing while three and half years were spent in the studio attempting to hone both sound and substance,” Biz concludes.
“This is an ALBUM not a collection of tracks. We've attempted to craft something classic in the tradition of those albums that came before it and those albums that’ll be considered timeless ten years from now.”
Track List:
1. INTRODUCTIONS ASIDE
2. COMMERCIAL HELL
3. ANTI B-BOY
4. FUCK A GUEST SPOT (F.A.G.S)
5. GLOVES OFF! FT. OVERPROOF PETE

Large Professor - Professor @ Large
Ya'll ready know what time it is!! It's Xtra P time bitch, case you don't know!
"There’s a lot to be learned from Large Professor – how to produce, how to rhyme, how to cultivate new talent, how to stay creative and consistent for decades. The passing years only increase his legendary status – as a major collaborator with Main Source, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, etc. – while re-confirming his originality with each new project. So what’s on the syllabus for the Professor’s latest class? In his own words: “taking it back to the B-boy uprock style.”
His latest masterwork Professor @ Large drops June 26 on Fat Beats Records. Large’s impeccable craftsmanship shines on each of the 15 songs, many of them at upbeat park jam tempos. Whether he’s spitting hard with MOP’s Lil Fame, dropping an ill instrumental, or casting his wizened gaze out of the kaleidoscopic cover art, Large Pro is always smooth, on point and uniquely himself.
In addition to Lil Fame, the album features a connoisseur’s selection of fine MCs: Busta Rhymes reminiscing in double-time on “Straight from the Golden”; Cormega and Tragedy Khaddafi bringing the streets on “Focused Up”; Mic Geronimo and Grand Daddy IU keeping cool on “Mack Don Illz”; and Cormega, Saigon, Roc Marciano and Action Bronson comprising the stunning “M.A.R.S” – easily the best posse cut of 2012. In a classy move, Large Pro gives Marco Polo the album’s only production guest spot on the title track."

Out Da Box TV - ROC MARCIANO Interview
Good interview with Roc Marc right here. I didn't know he was working with Q-tip for the reloaded album. Do the math with that then! Check out the previously unreleased 7" joints he's got coming out this year too. I would personally love to hear a more aggressive delivery from him for time to time. Some flipmode/UN type shit but that's me. I'm still feeling the new features. Maybe I need to start smoking again.
Part 1
"Out Da Box TV is extremely proud to bring you a special new interview with the unique and talented NY Emcee "Roc Marciano". After pursuing an interview with Roc for almost 2 years, we finally got the chance to speak with him, during his recent visit back to his hometown of NY. We captured quite a bit of interesting convo with Roc about his neighborhood upbringing, his music career, writing process, his love for the old NY and much more. This interview was so extensive that I actually had to split it into 2 parts. In this first part, Roc speaks more in detail about his creative writing approach and how growing up in NY helped to shape his sound. He also speaks on his successful solo album "Marcberg" and what inspired the creativity behind the project. Without a doubt, Roc is one of our favorite Emcees in hip hop today! So it was extremely a pleasure and an honor to build with the man himself. Please take the time to view this truly in-depth interview piece on the creative Hempstead, Long Island Emcee"
Part 2
"As promised Out Da Box TV is happy to bring you Part 2 of our in-depth interview with NY Emcee "Roc Marciano". In this segment, Roc gives us some insight on his move to Cali, and provides advice to up and coming NY Emcees. He also speaks on his aspirations for his forthcoming album "Reloaded", the experience gained in working with Q-Tip and meeting J. Dilla for the first time. The interview concludes with Roc listing a number of upcoming projects he plans to release and some optimistic closing words for his fans. It indeed was a special fulfillment to finally work with Roc for this interview. We give much respect to the brother for being humble enough to build with us on such an extensive level. Please take the time to enjoy this segment of the interview and definitely be sure to check out Part 1 if you haven't yet. We hope you are inspired! Enjoy!"

Ever Pleasing Artwork Part 1.
Flicking through some of my LP's the other day my eyes passed over the ever pleasing artwork by Brian Life from Smut Peddlers - Porn Again. Classic album with a perfectly complemented cover. Got me thinking, you dont see much in the way of atrists colaborating together to bring you some visually pleasing cover art. These days it seems to be somewhat of a chore, no forethough whatsoever, just another run of the mill portrait in front of a wall or some shit. Granted the proof is in the pudding but why go the half measure. I love looking / experiencing artwork, reading the liner notes etc.. basically appreciating the fact that one artist has reached out to another etc.
Anyways here's a few albums that spring to mind that have colaborated with the contemporary and illistrative touch to bring you some classic covers. Some have great music on them and some not so great but thats not the point here.
After tweeting the idea peoples hit me with a few classics I may have missed and it was bought to my attention that XXL ran a similar article. But fuck em. These are some of my personal faviourites
Beastie Boys 86 release - licensed to Ill
Artwork by World B. Omes
"EAT ME"!!
Celsius - Kicking it to Hell and Back
Artwork by Dash
Without question Dash has done some incrediable artwork for the SBX camp but this album for Sydneys Celcius is one that always sticks out in my head coming up as a kid. Dope shit.
Aint noting on You Tube from these guys and I couldnt be arsed ripping my wax the this post.
Cage - Depart from Me
Artwork by Alex Pardee
Cage went off even more left of feild on this 2nd Def Jux release after parting EC Records. I dont care much for for the music on this album but the watercolour artworks killer. You may have seen some of Alex Pardee's designs feature on SF clothing label Upper Playground. Cage's earlier release Movies for the Blind cover by Brian Life that should also get a mention while were on the topic of old Chris Palko.
I wont let your ears be subjected to any of this.
Ice. T - Home Invasion.
Artwork by David Halili
I remember seeing this shit on a t-shirt back when I was a kid and was fearful of it. This was back when this kinda stuff was a contrevery..Warner wanted to Drop the cover so Ice T released it on Rhyme Syndicate.
Ski masks and Shotgun butts to the dome. These kids are getting brainwashed by Ice mother fucking T! ha!
Immortal Technique – Revolutionary Vol. 2
Artwork by Alton Fletcher
Fist glance you wouldnt even give this artwork a second look but what is revealed once the inlay is opened out is bullet pepperd heads slumped around the white house office. I think Tec clearly made his point.
Part 2 will come when I could be fucked

All new stock, hats, jumpers, tees, button downs...The price is right so everything must go (Ian Turpie voice) R.I.P Ian Turpie. Props to the 1/2 man with door hinges for stems too.
Prodigy "Has Something to Say"
A very misleading blog title. P really has fuck all to say other than "I'm tired and been up for 4 days straight" Turn off after the 1st minute. Whatever the intro track is at the start is the reason for me posting this. That shit is fucking fire! If HNIC 3 is on some shit like this then I think I speak for the majority, we'll all be happy. The complex HNIC 3 mixtape was fucking straight garbage minus 1 or 2 joints. French Montana & Wokka foka or whatever he goes by can go get fucked. Shit was a complete backwards step from the 1st mix he dropped when he got out. Drop the bullshit and stick to the script.

Galileo iOS Motion Controll
A cool little tool I found over Kickstarter. Id like to use something like this with a Go Pro once they release an adapter and sort out the connectivity. They certainly cracked a market gaining well over their projected goal of $100k with still 18 days left.
The Galileo is a revolutionary, iOS-controlled robotic iPhone platform with infinite spherical rotation capability. Just swipe your finger on the screen of your iPad or other iOS device and Galileo reacts, orienting your iPhone or iPod Touch accordingly. With applications in areas of photography, cinematography, social networking, and video conferencing, Galileo gives iOS devices endless possibilities of remote-controlled motion. Capable of infinite 360° pan-and-tilt at speeds up to 200° per second in any orientation, Galileo is an invaluable tool to everyone from an amateur photographer to the professional cinematographer, and vastly improves the experience of video chat for anyone needing to stay connected.

Lee Fields & The Expressions - Faithfull Man
Back in May last year I had the opportunity to see Lee Fields & The Expressions at South Paw, Brooklyn NYC. The show was mind blowing. I wont go into details but this man's stage presence and voice complemented by The Expressions creating this fresh, new soul sound yet still drawing from the old sound(think what El Michels Affair did with 36 chambers) was nuts live. Motherfucker has them dapper boogie moves and the eye fuck on them ladies down pat too.
Anyways his new album dropped last week. Get a hardcopy or digital HERE.
"Since the late sixties Lee Fields has amassed a prolific catalog and has played and toured with such legends as Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers, O.V Wright, and many more. With a career spanning 43 years, it’s mind-blowing that the music he’s making today with Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records is the best of his career. While drawing comparisons to The Moments, The Delfonics, The Stylistics, and—of course—James Brown, Faithful Man is able to create a space of it’s own due to the group’s desire to interpret and further the formulas of good soul music rather then imitate them. Chalk that up to Truth & Soul producers and co-owners Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels. These are the same individuals that co-wrote, produced, and played on Aloe Blacc’s global smash I Need A Dollar, and have provided the back drop for records by Adele, GhostfaceKillah, and Jay-Z to name a few. “The older Fields becomes, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul” said DJ Oliver Wang about Fields in an NPR feature. Faithful Man is the next step towards perfection. A step that will find Lee Fields & The Expressions finally being bestowed the contemporary soul music crown."
I'll leave you with this clip of Lee covering Bobby Hebb’s ‘Sunny’. This all sounds so much better a that little BK sweat box but you know where I'm comin from.

Dark Days Documentary (Underground Lifestyle)
I'm sure many have already seen or heard about this doco. I hadn't . It's now over 11 years old but I'm glad I found it. An amazing documentary.
"Novice filmmaker Marc Singer lived in the bowels of a midtown Manhattan railway station for two years to shoot this harrowing account of the day-to-day existence of the homeless. Shot in noirish black and white, Singer shows how society's discarded and disenfranchised fashion a community of sorts in the sunless labyrinth of the station's transit tunnels. Though told without narration, a dozen or so individual stories emerge. Dee (the sole woman depicted in the film) lost all her children in a house fire while she was high on crack; Ralph remains inconsolable after his five-year old's rape and mutilation during a stint in prison. In the final reel, Amtrak sends in armed police to clean out the tunnels, citing health concerns. However, the subterranean tenets happen upon a stroke of luck, as an NYC social worker discovers a cache of previously unclaimed public housing. Featuring a sparse soundtrack by DJ Shadow, Dark Days won the Grand Jury prize for cinematography, the Freedom of Expression award, and an audience award at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival."

Hauie TV - Vocally Locally
I can only see this going from strength to strength for the ever so personable Hau. I'd like to see maybe a section or an episode dedicated to the producers. The gear they use, their records etc..
HAUIE TV is an on-line show that celebrates and focusses on the hip hop culture in Australia and overseas through interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and rhymes. Hosted by me, Hau - an MC, a radio presenter, a husband, a father, and a lover of all things beats, rhymes and life. I'm deep!"

CORMEGA AND LARGE PRO SPEAK ON "MEGA PHILOSOPHY"
For me I don't think it really can get much better than this aside from a new Show and AG record with show dropping some bars or some shit. Mega has always rated in my top list on the mic and Xtra P, well what can I say he's one of the all time greats. That production on Mega's last album was perfect, he killed that M.A.R.S joint recently. If your living under a fucking rock go check that
I'm liking they might be bringing in some young blood to come thru for this. I'm Hoping AG gets a guest spot after dropping his name. He better!

TORNTS - "Concrete Slang" Sampler
This Friday go do yourself a favor and go pick up a copy of the new album from Tornts 'Concrete Slang'. Judging from the sampler Tornts has called on some well respected producers to provide the backdrop yet still keeping a fluent and cohesive overall sound.

Brisbane Bullshit Part 2.5 of 4
Due to circumstances outside our control we had to remove the original Brisbane Bullshit pt 2 promo. Big shout to our friends Big Lroc aka Linz from the Ironlak writer team and DJ Lopsided of 750!
To keep the ball rolling we decided to upload in it's place a conversation Jake had with Lazy and Proof about some of their earlier shows around Brisbane. The boys have had a long and sordid history in the local hip hop scene, notorious for nights of booze soaked revelry!
Stay tuned for part 3...

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Thuggin
Gangsta Gibbs jumps off 2012 over some classic Madlib sounds for the 1st and hopefully not the last of collaborative projects. Fittingly titled Madgibbs.
The Thuggin' EP contains two main vocal tracks, instrumentals and two bonus beats. The record features a dual A-side cover with "Madlib" on one side, "Freddie Gibbs" on the other.
Hopefully the get something happening in terms of a full length....
Just check that motherfucking banana clip on the Russian piece of weaponry!
To be honest I ain't checked for Madlib since he did that medicine show, releasing a mix a month. Dude put in mad work but kinda lost me after the second one to be honest. Maybe I slept on some classic material but sometimes when you give the consumer too much on the table they get full just looking at it.
I do however need more shit like this. Midwest shit over dusty samples.
Peep the Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away EP with Statik Selektah thats exactly what I'm talking about. Did I mention shit was recorded in 24hrs.
This tracks a standout for me
