Break Of The Week

The Beatnuts - We Got The Funk

Wah Blow!

Oz hip hop wax on ebay

Its interesting and makes me think how much coverage the Australian hip-hop mainstream has grown & stimulated 2nd hand record prices(for better or worse)
I got 3-4 of the Rebels 12" I might have to part with one in a few years time so some 16 year old dooch bag can have it as a figure piece in his/her collection? (I think the bliss n pesto LP may confirm this)
Personally.. I buy and collect records, but I couldn't give two shits if I have a release or not. I rarely pay much more than 10% of the original sale price but thats just the Jew that I am!

Lets see what they fetch eh...

De La Soul - Brisbane 3 May, The Tivoli

Rather belated review but none the less. I was kind of glad this show moved from the Big Top, West End(still yet to be completed) to The Tivoli, Which is by far one of Brisbane best venues in my opinion with good sound, locality, and bar setups(to bad about wallet raping prices for drinks)

The show was a sellout so we got in early and posted left of stage. Night kicked off with locals Tom Thumb and Sampology showcasing their beatsmith skills on the mpc's chopping up a routine of stabs and loops while blending it with some nicely chosen wax along with Tom beat boxing & dropping a 16 here and there. Was pretty damn entertaining & got the crowd drawn closer to the front for the next act international DJ Cut Chemist.

This dude was on some shit I've never seen before. Having a live video editor on stage through out his set, Cut Chemist would handy cam record live audio/visual of the crowd with some simple call response type shit, jump back up on stage, get his right hand man to load it to his setup then manipulate the visual which was played through a projector and displayed on drop screen and cut up the audio...make sense??It was a fuck bang of the sensory I tell you!

Then...I got real pissed! So the next part is rather blurry. I've never been a huge De La fan so I wasn't sure what to expect. Firstly the backing band took the stage consisting of horns, percussion, bass, drums and keys adding a nice thickend sound to all the joints for the set.
All I can really remember is Pos rocking out in a windcheater looking like a damn fool, some tracks from 3 feet high "eye know" "Me Myself and I ", dres from Black Sheep taking to the stage for some guest spot shit, and then finishing with the crowd in their palm going out on "Ring Ring Ring"

Fuck I was impressed!! 20 years In the biz these 3 would want to know how to get the party cracking and they nailed it 100%

The Review :
Punch On's 2/10 (I seen one guy when I left with his head all split nursing it with some ice)
Ladies 8/10 (Damn!! they were dolled up to the 9's)
Piss Price 2/10 (10 clams for a B&C. Highway fucking robbery!!)
Sound 8/10
Live Acts 9/10 (would have been 10's if it wasn't for long lost Australian Idol Joel Turner blubbering sounds into his hands with his seppo accent sidekick trying to rap over him for 10 minutes)

Flicks from a shitty 3mp camera.

so, i was drunk and scouring the inet

Free Chappelle. uughghghuuggh. FUCK ME. really really really really fucked up shit derr.

pegs diss part 2

Probably old but i found the first one intriguing.
Particularly all the melbourne faggots on ozhiphop.com sticking up for their God.
Personally, i dont have much of an opinion one way or the other. i keep it strictly AC/DC, but personally, i reckon if someone with the notoriety of T.Dog disses you, then you shouldn't half step. (or in this case, roll over to the boss dog). Funny all the same.

DJ JS-1 New Ground Original "No Sellout".

Just a quickie. The new Ground Original is set to drop on the 23rd of june, produced entirely by Rocksteady wiz DJ JS-1. Clocking in at 79 minutes and featuring no less than 40 mc's collaborating over the course of 20 certified bangers "No Sellout" is shaping up as a strong contender for album of the year.
Its feeling like 1994 all over again with collabo's from OC and Pharoah Monch (anyone who remembers OC's sterling collaborations with Organized will be looking forward to this), an almost reformed Ultramagnetic MC's (TR Love couldn't make it by the looks of things), a Queensbridge posse cut featuring Poet, Noid, Craig G and Trez as well as a collaborative effort between AG, Edo G and Craig G titled "Original G'z". You can also count strong appearances from the likes of Sean P, Ill Bill, Large Pro, PMD, Sadat X, KRS-ONE and Prince Po amongst numerous others.
The following video is a mix of some of the albums hotter verses accompanied by some old video footage of the artists as thier track plays.

4th June 2009, 17:00 WST

American rap star Necro has been arrested by police over his alleged involvement in an assault in the Perth CBD this morning.
The rapper, who has had to cancel his scheduled show at the Hyde Park Hotel tonight, was arrested by police following the incident at the corner of Murray and Barrack streets about 10.30am.
A police spokesman said that one man had been punched in the face during the incident and had required medical treatment for his minor injuries. Two other men, including the rapper whose real name is Ron Braunstein, had been arrested and were helping police with their inquiries.
By late this afternoon no charges had yet been laid over the alleged assault.

Yo MTV Raps: D&D Studios

Yo MTV Raps was a show that screened from the late 80's to early/mid 90's and was hosted by hip-hop legend Fab Five Freddy. Freddy was the man responsible for the Andy Warhol soup cans whole car in StyleWars, and can also be seen painting in Blondie's 1981 tribute to hip-hop "Rapture".
More to the point, this post is about an early 90's interview with the Gangstarr Foundation ( i'm guessing early '93, Freddy throws to a new video from Snoop Dogg called Gin and Juice). The Gangstarr Foundation consisted of Guru and Premier (Gangstarr), Jeru the Damaja, Group Home (Malachi the Nutcracker and Lil Dap), Big Shug and several others at varying points in time.
Now you already know that posters of DJ Premier adorn the walls of the RoyalRundown offices, his incredible breadth and depth of work has been keeping real heads nodding for the better part of twenty years. But what you mightn't know is that i've often found his choice of MC somewhat mundane. Now i'm not talkin' about those one off heaters he laced your favourite mc with. No, i'm talkin about those phenomal audio experiances that he produced with Gangstarr, Group Home, Jeru and the NYG'z. The production on these releases is always cited as quintesentially his finest work but more often than not, the standard of rapping could only be referred to as dull.
Between Guru's "mono-tone style", Jeru's "devil hatin" and Group Home's, er, um, just being Group Home, i've wonderd wether it might have been Preemo's skills behind the boards that kept people listening. Honestly, has any one ever said, " Fuck, Lil Dap killed that livin proof shit". The answer is invariably NO. When Group Home's amazing 1996 album Livin Proof does come up in conversation its generally in regards to the quality of the production, thus why i believe none of these rappers have had even moderate success after exiting Premier's sphere.
So, anyway, while we kick back with our figers crossed and hope that this Blaq Poet LP thats set to drop in a week or two is everything its been shaping up to be, lets just enjoy this great bit of footage from a much simpler and less critical (ha ha) time.

PS- Isn't it great to see that even 16 years ago Preemo could waffle on with the best of them. Seriously, the guy could talk a glass eye to sleep. Enjoy!

G.O.A.T: LL Cool J?

With all the recent talk about "GOAT's" (Greatest Of All Time to the uninitiated) i thought i'd weigh in on the discussion. Now let me start by saying, by greatest i do not necessarily mean personal favourite. I'm talking longevity, strength of catalogue and live show dynamic. All of which our subject has in spades.
James Todd Smith released his first single waaaaaay back in 1985. "I Need A Beat" was produced by a then wet behind the ears producer named Rick Rubin in his dorm room and marked the first official release from Def Jam.
"I Need A Beat" would sell over 100,000 copies and be only the pre-cursor to a long and storied career that would include some of hip-hop's most influential albums and singles. Not only did he give us "Rock the bells" "I'm bad" and "I can't live without my radio" he also made some of the greatest guest spots ("Rampage" and "Flava in ya ear (remix)") in memory. He's battled Kool Moe Doe, Ice-T and Canibus amongst numerous others and never taken a loss. Never mind the cheesy cameos with J-Lo, the gay microphone tattoo and the fucking horrible TV shows he's been on, LL is one of the hardest, most battle ready MC's to ever put the words fuck and you together to make an insult. And thats an often forgotten fact.
By maintaining a strong female following (thats straight fag shit amongst hip-hop's hardcore listeners- irony?) his "realness" has been negated time and time again. For every "I need love" he's done two "I shot ya's" it's just that you have to waid through several R&B assisted, Timberland-esque chart toppers to find them.
In a career thats gone from the era of Kurtis Blow and RUN-DMC through Public Enemy and NWA to 50 Cent and Jay-Z, LL has stayed relevent, and less importantly, topped charts the world over. Which is a feat within itself for a rapper of his history given the current climate in the music industry, where vocoder voiced ring-tone artists top charts for as long it takes a 16 year old girl to answer her phone.
In short LL has proven to be the ultimate hip-hop chameleon, an artist who has been able to re-invent himself and adapt to changes within the ever fickle rap industry. Over the course of 13 albums (all of which for Def Jam) and almost two and a half decades LL has proven longevity and a consistent out put of product is possible, where others of his era have either fallen off (Rakim), gone hollywood (Ice Cube) or just left you baffled (Kool G Rap and RUN-DMC's nineties forays spring to mind) Cool James has kept on keeping on.
As the last of the good rap publications, HHC, once pointed out about "I'm Bad" and "Rock the Bells", if they aren't the ultimate declarations of b-boy supremacy then what the fuck are?
All that and he never lost a battle! (Did i already mention that?).
