Ghost Is In The Building!! A new Building!!

A change of Venue for the Brisbane Ghostface show moving from The Step In sweatbox to the recently renovated Hi-Fi Bar at West End, on the same date. Sunday 28th
The venue should do it all justice.. It holds a boot load more punters, and I'm told the sound is pretty top notch(It would want to be considering the internationals they have coming up)
I figure more tickets will be on sale. Click HERE for directions and further details.

The Blaq Print

Another quick little fix, but who ain't been feinding this LP from poet? c'mon..!Well, you heard it from the beady eyed gangstar himself. June 30 is the tentative date!
Note.. that this clip might make you fell a little sick with preem spining on his chair for the whole recording.
This second half of the year looks like its shaping up for some classic releases to drop from overseas and our own soil.

Preemo, Preemo, Preemo!

Honestly, i could listen to Preemo talk all day... So anyway, i'm scouring the murky depths of You Tube and i stumble across this gem. Hot97's Peter Rosenberg talking to Preem about Biggie and the "Unbelievable" sessions.
A fantastic account of the period from Waxmaster C's perspective. Always charismatic and entertaining, Preem discusses chillin' on the block with B.I.G. and and numerous others, to Biggie's near refusal to go out to L.A. (at Puff's insistence) where, as we all know now, he would be fatally gunned down at the height of the East/West beef.
To me, this shit is compulsive viewing. A rare insight into the sights and sounds of a time that i can only spin on a turntable. All of which from a man who was there and created some of it's most memorable moments.

Mothers Day Muggers!

This months come around pretty quick and I've been a little slow getting this one together.
Its actually the b-side to last months flip with the Kitaro -silver clouds LP(Kind of fitting in light of me booking flights to Tokyo).
Anyway, I had so much sampled from the original and ended up culling it down and chopping it a little different to how I envisioned it, due to the time signature. Kept it simple with the loop, bass, played some keys(not on this version) and bashed a layered drum break with that late 90's boom-bap feel...Snap a neck!!

The Seventh Letter

When I think of a few writers/crews from the East Coast US that inspired my (at this point in time rather stagnate)graff career in the late 90's, I need not elaborate much further than the likes of Tats crew, seen, FX, Cope.
When It come to inspiration and influence from the West Coast back then and now, I'm a hands down fiend for MSK, AWR. Most notable known now as the seventh letter crew.
Featuring some of the most inventive, active and business orientated writers in the states and worldwide for that matter, ranging in fields from film, tattoo, graphic & web based multimedia, textile printing and jewelery making, they have certainly made their mark in all creative areas.

We will most definatly be stocking the latest seventh letter clothing range featuring revok, pose, retna, and few others..
I'll follow up with some pics when they arrive.

Until then I'll leave you with some links of some of their works.

Posse Cuts Pt. 5: West Coast Rap All-Stars- We're All In The Same Gang

What a way to go into the weekend! I'll bet no one guessed this little gem was coming. We here at The Rundown like to throw a curve ball here and there. The '91 Grammy nominated posse cut "We're All In The Same Gang" was spearheaded by the Warner Bros. Music Group in assosciation with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in response to Los Angeles' growing gang problem. Produced by Dr. Dre and featuring most of the West Coasts prominant artists at that time (with the exception of Cube, DJ Quick, Spice1 etc.) We're All In The Same Gang plays like the contradictory cousin of KRS-ONE's Stop The Violence Movement. The sheer hypocrisy of this record astounds me. Most all the rappers on here (with the exclusion of Hammer and Young MC) had already, and would continue to glorify gun and gang culture.Whats most interesting about this joint is that in the same year as it's release Dr. Dre would have a 22 milion dollar law suit filed against him by co-collaborater and member of Body&Soul, Dee Barnes. The story goes that after a Dee Barnes interview with Ice Cube at the height of the NWA/Cube beef in 1991, NWA's members had felt slighted by the remarks made by the R&B songstres and host of Pump It Up (a popular hip-hop show at the time).
Dr. Dre would encounter Dee Barnes at a record release party in Hollywood and according to reports by on-lookers the good doctor would proceed to bash her and try and throw her down a flight of stairs as his security gaurd held the crowd back.
Atfer escaping into the female toilets Dre followed her and proceeded to bash her in the side of the head some more.
Eazy-E would later comment on the incedent by saying "...bitch had it coming.." While Dre would go on to say, "...it ain't no big thing- i just threw her through a door".
Dr. Dre would later go to court and plead no contest to the assault charges, he recieved a 2500 dollar fine and two years probation.
We're all in the same gang indeed.

Oh, by the way, thats Dee Barnes at 0.35 seconds. just after King T.

Posse Cuts Pt. 4: Main Source- Live at the Barbeque.

There's not much that can be said that hasn't already about this particular track.
Taken from Main Source's seminal 1991 release on Wild Pitch, "Breaking Atoms" introduced the world to not only a hungry young MC named Nasty Nas but an innovative and layerd take on sampling and production.
Cited by many as one of the most under-rated yet ground-breaking groups Hip-Hop has produced Large Pro, K-Cut and Sir Scratch only released one proper studio album as a trio. Large Pro would leave the group shortly after "Breakin Atoms" and sign a solo deal with Geffen, while the remaining two would try and keep the Main Source name alive to no real avail.
"Live at the Barbeque" not only introduced us to Nas but also Akinyele, who in a couple of years time would have his debut album "Vagina Diner" produced entirely by Large Professor. Tragedy Khadafi's one time DJ Joe Fatal also makes an appearance killing it (on a side note, Joe Fatal dicoverd Ill Bill and produced his first ever 12" Dope Fiend).
A need no introduction type track, " Live at the Barbeque" stands alongside "The Symphony" and "Scenario" as one of the greatest posse cuts of all time.

Main Source-Live at the Barbeque ft. Nasty Nas, Akinyele and Joe Fatal.

What will be the last posse cut of the week? Check in tomorrow.

Double Barrel Buckin'

Another fresh new joint called "Party Crashers" from the upcoming Marco Polo & Torae colab lp.
Shit is fire son!!

Posse Cuts Pt. 3: Red Hot Lover Tone- 4 My Peeps

What is most interesting about this particular post is that Red Hot Lover Tone isn't just another one of the plethora of NY rappers who fell back into relative obscurity after the mid nineties. He started out as, and remains one half of production super-group The Trackmasters (a.k.a. Poke and Tone) who are responsible for some of the biggest records in and outside of Hip-Hop. Most notably working with artists as diverse as G Rap, Will Smith, Michael Jackson, Nas, Destiny's Child snd J-Lo.On this, Tone's second and last album as an MC he enlisted the assistence of DITC alum Buckwild and Diamond (i don't know if it's coincedence that he sounds uncannily like Big L) on a more than a handful of tracks, as well as calling in verses from Big Daddy Kane, Greg Nice and Charlie Brown (Leaders of the New School). Released to little or no fanfare in 1995 on Select Records, #1 Player featured posse cut, "4 My Peeps" twice on the one album, with the original produced by Buckwild and a remix by Tone himself.Featuring Biggie killing it in his hoodie and timb's hey-day and a "Firing Squad" era Lil Fame and Billy Danze, this track hits the mark from start to finish. Though it states Organized Konfusion on the track listing only Prince Poetry shows up putting in a sterling effort none the less.Enjoy!Red Hot Lover Tone- 4 My Peeps ft. Biggie Smalls, M.O.P. and Organized Konfusion. Stay tuned for part 4.

Mr. Trials - For The Ladies

Here's a tidy little EP from Trials 1/3 of Adelaide outfit the Funkoars , which hit the shelves a few years back.
Impressive production produced entirely by Trials, Dope concept artwork from Mexi(who takes care of most of the Obese camp's design/artwork), and guest verses featuring tuff 16's from Vents 1, Sesta, and Brisbane's Robby Balboa also stepping up to the plate.
I put these up here purely for listening. Not for re-sale or distributing. If you like it.. hunt down a copy or contact the artist.

Format : MP3
Bit rate : 192kbps

Posse Cuts Pt. 2: Heavy D & The Boyz- A Buncha Niggas

Alright, now before you think we've gone soft posting about "the over-weight lover" himself, recognise; This album did have some good moments. In particular this posse cut which rounded out the heavsters fourth album, Blue Funk.
Released in 1992 on Uptown Records and executive produced by a then little known A&R named Sean 'Puffy' Combes, Blue Funk wasn't as successful as the over-weight lover's previous releases (anyone remember "Now that we found love", top ten hillarity from 91 with heavy dancin' around in a fluro yellow raincoat). The album packed a bit of punch though, with production from DJ Premier and Pete Rock ( Heavy's cousin).
The most notable thing about this album and, in particular, this song was the first on wax appearance of Biggie Smalls (pre Notorious), as well as a somewhat bizarre Busta Rymes verse. Also featuring Rob-O before he formed future Pete Rock collaboraters INI, Guru dropping a typically forgetable verse and 3rd Eye whom i know very little about, "A Buncha Niggas" plays like an early blueprint to the formula Puffy would later use on Craig Mack's "Flavor in ya ear" remix.
Long story short, Heavy kills it, Biggie kills it, Rob-O kills it, Guru's average and Busta is just plain fucking wierd.
Definately worth a listen if you've haven't before.

Heavy D & The Boyz-A Buncha Niggas ft. 3rd Eye, Guru, Biggie Smalls, Rob-O and Busta Rhymes.

Posse Cuts Pt.1: Lord Finesse- Actual Facts

What do you get when The Funky-man, The Wildcowboy, The Mad Professor and Pete Rock's original ghost-writer (thats right folks, Grand Puba wrote most of Mt. Vernon's finests rhymes back in the early days) team up over a classic Lord Finesse back-drop? A bonafide classic, thats what!
Originally found as a secret track on 1995's The Awakening, it would later see a release as the b-side of the Gameplan 12" in 1996.
A new millenium re-issue of The Awakening would see the track feature prominently amongst a veritable treasure trove of mid-nineties favourites. Guests on the album include amonst others KRS-ONE, O.C., Kid-Capri, Akinyele and Diamond D.
A classic song and an even greater video that does much too enhance the initial impact of the song (in my opinion). Check the cameo's from KRS, Diamond and a pre-jiggy Fat Joe hitten the double bass.

Lord Finesse-Actual Facts ft. Sadat X, Large Pro and Grand Puba.

Posse Cuts part 2 coming tomorrow.
