Guru Passes Away

Legendary emcee and producer Keith "Guru" Elam passed away in a New York City hospital. Just over six weeks since the former Gang Starr front-man was publicly reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest and been hospitalized, he died due to complications from undisclosed cancer after having been diagnosed with Anoxia.

The controversy surrounding Guru's hospitalization, visitation rights, and recovery with present musical partner Solar led to limited information being released to press. What is known is that the 43 year-old Guru had suffered a heart attack, gone into a coma, and despite reports of strong recovery, ultimately lost his battle with what has now been revealed as cancer.

In Your Face..Part 2

A few weeks back I thought id get a little blog adventurous and spark a bit of a theme over the next few months focusing on outstanding production, drilling down on instrument specific sounds that stand out on a track.

In Your Face Part 1, I took a look 10 joints with a distinctive bass. By the time I got to the end of the ten I realised I'd still missed a few classic examples that I felt had to be done.
I wont bite off too much so I'm going to leave you with another five of my personal favourites with that bass that should get the boot and bumper rattling on the hoopty.

Showbiz & AG - Next Level (Nyte Time Mix)
Producer : DJ Premier

An all time classic album, Incredible production throughout from the baddest mar fuckers in the game. I'm slightly biased with this one as Andre's one of my favourites to ever grace the mic. Premo doing what he does best on this remix. Sample taken from Maynard Ferguson's - Mister Mellow.

"No surrender and no retreat"

Eric B. and Rakim - Dont sweat the technique.
Produced by Eric B.

Sax, snap backs, bass slaps, and bitches with back. This Clip stinks of the early 90's with bad bomber jackets, leather snap back caps, bitches with perms, heavy chains and pendants and of course Eric B throwin' off his best ice grill.
I think "Paid In Full" should also get a mention but this fretless jazzy bass melody lifted for the track accompanied with the sax and drum break holds a little more weight for me as far as how well pronounced the bass rolls throughout.
No sure were the bass is from on this one sorry.

"Mc's wanna beef when I play for keeps"

Notorious BIG -Juicy
Produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs.

Taken from the debut LP Ready to die, this being the 1st single. After the little high hat intro with keys and that tight pop and slap bass comes through the break you'll know why I chose this. Sample jacked from the tragic 80's track Juicy Fruit. The 12" features an instrumental remix by Pete Rock. In my opinion the remix comes nowhere close without that bass and drums throughout.

"Fuck all you hoes. Get a grip"

Alkoholiks - Only When I'm Drunk
Produced by E-Swift

Taken From The Liks 1st LP. This break section notably features on It's My Thing by EPMD off Strictly Business which came out prior to this 93 release. To be honest I'm more a fan of Tash and J-Ro going back and forth on this, plus I think E-Swift is an extremely underrated DJ/Producer.
The track Seven Minutes of Funk has been passed around like a cheap slapper through the hip hop generations. From Kurtis Blow to Gravediggaz, Jay-Z and more recently on Giantz ta thiz from NYGz Album, Welcome to G-Dom with Premo using the same section. The effect on the bass is fucking timeless and catchy as all shit aint it!

"I get drunk and I stumble to the phone and conjure up a bitch to bone when I'm alone"

Phat Kat feat. Elzhi
Produced by J.Dilla

Fight music right here. Downtuned and thickened up with a dope progression. I know its not a bass maybe a clavinet? shit is relentless. Dilla's choped it that nice you couldn't even pick it.
As for the spits, Phat Kat murks this withing the first two bars. The power in his voice in that last verse make me want to go out and break something!
I never pick up the lp this was taken from but I've heard mixed reports.

"Jumping out with long barrels with expansion clips"

Post up any more you can think of in the comments!

This came through the inbox the other day and I thought Id share on behalf of the Weird Gear com padres.

"This was our special "soundtrack edition", most of what you will hear in these mp3s are random soundtracks from around the world, not genre specific, not generally cohesive, but definitely hand picked for one reason or another.

Geeeyeah! MC Eiht signs with Year Round.

Granted, it's been more than a minute since i checked for an MC Eight solo but anyone with even a passing knowledge of west coast hip hop knows that Compton's Most Wanted were far more than just the poor mans NWA (as i once read in an early 90's issue of RapPages).
1992's Striaght Checkin' Em could probably be considered the groups creative apex, but there's no denying Eiht has been doing his "Compton thang" for sometime now with varying results.
With 20 releases under his belt ( CMW, solo outings and the stuff he did with Spice1) as well as a Snoop Dogg co-sign it seems like MC Eiht might be back, rejuvenated and with a new direction after signing to DJ Premier's imprint Year Round Records.
I've also heard the NYG'z have a guest spot alongside Marco Polo who is providing some of the beats to the forth-coming album, Which Way Is West.

Here's an album preview....

.... and here's an early (very classic) CMW and DJ Premier team up, Def Wish II (Remix).

McGee and Romeo Travis

Five talented young basketball players from Akron, Ohio star in this remarkable true-life coming of age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity. Coached by a charismatic but inexperienced player’s father, and led by future NBA superstar LeBron James, the “Fab Five”’s improbable nine-year journey leads them from a decrepit inner-city gym to the doorstep of a national high school championship. Along the way, the close-knit team is repeatedly tested — both on and off the court — as James’ exploding worldwide celebrity threatens to destroy everything they’ve set out to achieve together. MORE THAN A GAME combines a series of unforgettable one-on-one interviews with rare news footage, never-before-seen home videos and personal family photographs to bring this heart-wrenching and wholly American story to life.

hab-a-looc

Hab-a-looc, that's coolabah backwards!
My cask wine days are over but far from forgotten. I vividly recall many a goon hoon up to the Sunnybank for movie marathons with nothing more than my cardboard briefcase, a pocket full of lint, pipe and some markers, on the hunt to get the fingers dipped in some honey.
You might be saying to yourself.."So. Fuck off and post something decent for once".

No! fuck off!..Id like to pay respectos were respectos is due to the bladder in a box. More importantly, it's come to my attention via the ABC News page that my homeboy Thomas Angove, inventor of the wine cask aka (the sack, goon sack, silver pillow, goon bag, bums briefcase, flagon, goon flag) passed away yesterday aged 92. A bums head no longer rests on a pillow made of concrete thanks to Thomas. Chea!

Via ABC News :

The inventor of the wine cask, South Australian Riverland grape grower Thomas Angove, has died in Renmark, aged 92.
Mr Angove revolutionised wine packaging in the 1960s when he created the resealable plastic bag in a cardboard box.
His son, managing director of Angove Wines John Angove, says his father was a great contributor to the wine industry.
"I remember dad coming home with this sort of prototype of a plastic bag inside a cardboard box and I remember thinking to myself and I probably said it to dad 'That's crazy, nobody will buy wine in a plastic bag stuck inside a cardboard box', but in his usual manner he persisted," he said.
"He thought he was onto a good thing and history certainly indicates that he was.
"His commitment and involvement in industry matters and industry bodies and the welfare of the industry overall, as opposed to just Angove family winemakers, was very significant and I think reflects his very broad vision of what the world and life was all about."

Cheap, portable, non leaking tap plus the fact you can get off guts with 3 off your mates are just a few of the many attractive qualities of the cask as a youngster. Utilise your cask, a hills hoist clothes line and you got a good old game of Goon of Fortune (I can taste that fruity lexia just thinking about it) This will get you pussy kids!

Middle aged men getting down with it.
