The Super Man Lover Says "Its On!"
Were giving away more free shit this friday night on Phat Tape radio, 4zzz 102.FM
All you have to do is tune in or stream it HERE from 8-10pm. listen out and be the first to call in and answer the pretty damn nuff-nuff question "What is one of the labels or artists Run Royal stocks?"
Dont miss out.
Dissizit Spring Collection
I know we aint got a much in the way of Slicks label Dissizit, but it's definitely one of the many quality independent labels Run Royal are looking at stocking this year if we get some support behind us. This years spring cut and sew collection has a rugged work wear look to it which in my opinion is a breath of fresh air in comparison to some of the utter fluronic faggotory I've seen in spring/fall catalogues from other, now very questionable labels.
This drop sports some nice all over prints, the usual logo tees with some slight variations, denim, pants, jackets and all the rest. Peep LA game.

Happy 42nd Birthday Michael
To keep the theme running as we do...MJ turned 42 today. What does this have to do with hip-hop you say? No much, apart from the odd mad cunt rapper sporting some joints and dropping a line here and there.
Let us rejoice this BK natives steez and ye old black, grey and red colourway we've come to love.
Well before my starter caps and fleer rookie cards Jordan put it in Patricks grill. And 1 Baby!
Freeze frame at 1.24 That's the money!!
Cracker vs Blacker. The 87 playoffs..Jordan vs Bird
Nice compilation over the Dropkick Murphy's tune "Shipin' off to Boston". Classic!

Happy 52nd Birthday Tracey.
Tracey Marrow aka Ice "Muthafukin" T turned fifty-two yesterday, which means he's been rappin' for more years than the average age of the common 50 Cent fan.... Or so goes my estimation.

.... Featuring Raekwon. Part 1
You might think we've gone a little crazy over the Chef Shallah Raekwon in recent times but i make no excuses, dude's been droppin' heatrocks like no one's business lately. First there was OB4CL2, then there was his scene stealing appearance on the otherwise mediocre BlacRoc album and now i here he's teaming up with the Kool Genius of Rap for a full length, alongside yet to be released guest spots with Evidence and Sean P.
This more than welcome news got me thinkin' about prior appearances from The Chef, and more to the point, the finesse with which he graced the mic alongside some truly great MC's.
So here we go, first up;
Mobb Deep ft Raekwon- Nighttime Vultures
Rae appeared on the Mobb's first three albums (technically their 2nd, 3rd and 4th but i don't really rate Juvenile Hell as it never saw an official release) but it's his appearance on Hell On Earth that wins for me. Havoc's mellanchollic strings provide the perfect bed for P and Rae to kick their own brand of nihilism over.
Cocoa Brovaz (aka Smif N Wessun) ft Raekwon- Black Trump
For a brief period in the mid to late 90's Smif n Wessun changed their name due to law suits filed against them by gun manufacture Smith and Wesson. During the Cocoa Brovaz period their out put was less than spectacular, several sub-par compilation tracks and a mediocre long player. Though amongst it all they managed to record this certified banger for which they also made a video. From 1998's The Rude Awakening and produced by Ron Beatz.
Big Pun ft Fat Joe, Raekwon and Armageddon- Firewater
A spectacular head-nodder produced by Showbiz. Rae more than holds his own alongside the lyrical titan that Pun was as well as an in form Joey Crack and Terror Squad alumni Armageddon. This track (to my knowledge) can be found originally as the B-side to Fat Joe's absolutely horrid Envy 12" and later on the posthumous Big Pun release Endangered Species. I'd personally take Firewater over the more well known John Blaze off Fat Joe's Don Cartagena any day.
La the Darkman ft Raekwon- Az The World Turns
Whats a Rae post without a story telling joint, and this one comes courtesy of Wu affiliate La's 98 debut Heist of the Century. Funny thing is i own the promo only 12" of this track released by Fo'Real Records in 1996, pre-dating Heist of the Century released on Supreme Team Entertainment by two years. A masterful writer of narrative equalled only by the legendary Slick Rick, Rae brings his A-game to this cut and generally out-shines his counterpart.
Of course i haven't even scratched the surface of such a prolific MC, but in the coming days i'll post up part two where we'll take a look at some of Raekwon's collaborations with artists outside the Tri-State area (NY that is).

Funkmaster Wizard Wiz: Crack It Up.
I recently read a great interview with an eighties Bronx MC known as Funkmaster Wizard Wiz. I knew little to nothing about the dude aside from his affiliation with the Tuff City label, so i thought i'd better do the knowledge and check him out.
What i discovered i loved and i thought it only right to share with our faithful followers, but first here is a section of the interview that most intrigued me:
One of your most well-known tracks was ‘Crack It Up’. What was the story behind that?
At that time when I had wrote that, that was the initial time that the crack epidemic was really getting bad in our communities. It was like a recreational drug at that time, because nobody knew the effect that it would have in the long term. So it was kinda cool to be indulging with it in the beginning when it first came out, but as time went on I started seeing the effects and how it was affecting people I knew and people that was around me. I tried to put it into a record where it was just funky, but the public thought that I was promoting the use of crack. Once I came out with the initial song, they played it on the radio…we’ve got a bunch of phone calls in, banning it from the radio – asking Red Alert how they could play something like that. Because the hook seemed like it was indulging people to use crack After we got that feedback we had to go back in the studio and put, ‘You better not’ in front of the initial hook [‘Crack It Up!’], but by that time the damage had been done. The word was out that this guy was out there promoting this – this wild and crazy guy. [Adding] ‘You better not’ didn’t help save the record at all. I was labeled with that title and was banned off the radio. I believe it was KISS-FM.
Now maybe it's just my interpretation, but after several listens to the song in point i've come to the conclusion that Funkmaster Wizard Wiz was indeed glorifying the use of crack (he actually encourages the overweight to use it in aid of slimming down because its easier than exercise) more than drawing attention to its negative impacts..... And i for one don't mind in the slightest, as a matter of fact i thought this shit was fuckin' slammin. After more than a decade of horrible "Crack is Wack" songs i found it more than refreshing to hear someone buck, what would later become, the status quo (so to speak).
On top of it all there's a more than a million crackheads in the world, which says to me someone must be enjoying the stuff.
Why not Funkmaster Wizard Wiz?!?! Plus this joint is funny as fuck.
If anyone can track this joint down on wax please contact Run Royal, i'd be more than interested in purchasing it.
