Dust & Grooves is a photo and interview project documenting and exalting vinyl records, the people who love them, and the musical heritage they carry.

With a website launched in October 2008 by Brooklyn-based professional photographer and vinyl addict Eilon Paz, D&G profiles individual collectors from all over the world in their natural environment – usually at home with their personal collections. Each subject is interviewed in depth about their devotion to vinyl, then each conversation is paired with a beautiful series of portrait photographs by Eilon that capture the heart and soul of this passionate avocation. Together, words and images tell the story of the love affair between collector and collection, and preserve a record of music that otherwise might be lost.

Tape Death & M dusu Present: Des Chansons Sur Les Filles

Tape Death & I are pleased to drop the next volume of the canon - an instrumental release called Des Chansons Sur Les Filles.

Running 12 tracks deep, this release is a celebration of ladies & love - some grown folk music. I went with a mix of 60s-70s vinyl sampling, over-saturated live instruments & analogue-treated synths, & went with traditional soul/R&B chord progressions mixed with wonky futuristic rhythms.

It might not be to your taste, & I'm cool with that - I was going for something, & I think i achieved most of my goals. Hopefully that makes for interesting listening for some of you.

I cant give you much of info about on this guy, all I know is that he frequents the forum boards and gets down with a gang of producers going under the name Tape Death.
The whole thing sets a pretty layed back and Lo-Fi feel which works well for me. Reminds me of a recent record I purchased from the Hi-Hat club series...Well swung drums, soulful vocal samples, ambient background layered with a touch of synth. Good shit.

GoodFelons and Roc Marciano proudly presents the debut release on GoodFelons, Roc Marciano - The Prophecy EP. Roc first made waves in the underground scene when him and production and rhyming partner, Ox, dropped the now-classic Noose Vol#1 in 1997. Having been well received by the likes of Stretch & Bobbito and featured on countless mixtapes, this record has eluded many hip hop fans for years.

GoodFelons has stepped in and for our initial release, we've decided to go back and remaster the original Noose Vol #1, and add two new certified bangers from the same sessions. The previously unreleased and unheard Drama and Same Ol' Same are the two new tracks being added to this release, and we hope you find them to be as dope as we did when we first heard them. Its a shame it took 14 years to see these get pressed, but better late than never right? Artist Interview : Beastie Boys' Adrock (Adam Horovitz)

To hear Adam Horovitz describe his first experiences with beat-making you'd almost think it sounds easy. "I didn't know that was something I could do," he says almost dismissively. "And I did. And I got into it" But under his moniker "Adrock" and along with the other two Beastie Boys, Mike D and MCA, Adam didn't just make beats... he helped invent a whole new style of beat collage and layered production that inspired a generation of artists that would follow them. The Beastie Boys have an uncanny ability to convey fun and experimentation - perfectly maintaining the humor from their early jams all the way to the final master. It's a feat not often duplicated for many who let the perfectionism, quantization, and over-analysis of the recording studio environment ultimately deflate the creative output.

Adam invited us over to his home studio in New York City where he produces all of his ideas. After nearly 15 years producing music on his trusty SP1200 workstation, Adam made a near instant switch to Reason after a recommendation of fellow Beastie Boy, Mike D.

For this interview, there were too many great stories to fit into a single interview so be sure to check out Adrock's deleted scenes for some gems you've probably never heard before.

Copy's 1st release to wax, this track also featured on his debut The High Exhaulted. You either fuck with this dude or you don't. I personally ain't fucked with much after this the 1st lp and some weathermen tracks.

A very slept on LP in my opinion. Pretty cohesive album with all beats taken care of by RJD2 and Mighty Mi. Copywright had already established his niche fan base taking out several freestyle battles years prior and then got put on by the now debunk Eastern Conference, which back then held the crown for white boy rappers and weirdos.
RJD2 chops these horns real nice, throwing some tight stabs, bass, topped off with some of the best wordplay and punchlines from that time. Don't front!

Ludacris - Roll Out (My Business)

Love him or hate him Timberland has produced some pretty good shit. This track right here is one of them. Simple and effective using some Cuban horns over programmed drum patterns and synth leads.
I rate Ludacris. He's got a presence and charisma when he gets on some shit like this. This track taken from Word of Mouf. Clip reminds me of NBA Jam.

A combination of chopped horns, bellowing low covered with saturated bass, screeching trumpets stabbing in and out on the 3rd and 4th complimented with them signature preem drums and po's "I will fuck you up" bars. I honestly though this album was a little lacking in parts as far as beat selection from po and the order of the tracks as a whole but ones like this make it worth the purchase. More classic southside smashin'

All time classic hip-hop joint from Pete Rock and C.L smooth's debut Mecca and the soul brother. The song is a tribute to Pete Rock's brother "Trouble T-roy" (Troy Dixon) who was a dancer for Heavy D and the Boyz and died in a tragic accident when he fell off of a balcony after a concert in Indianapolis on July 15, 1990.
I got a feeling this is a saxophone but fuck it..Shit burns. So god damn catchy over them drums. Pete Rock sampling Tom Scott's cover of "Today" by Jefferson Airplane.

In Your Face..Part 2

A few weeks back I thought id get a little blog adventurous and spark a bit of a theme over the next few months focusing on outstanding production, drilling down on instrument specific sounds that stand out on a track.

In Your Face Part 1, I took a look 10 joints with a distinctive bass. By the time I got to the end of the ten I realised I'd still missed a few classic examples that I felt had to be done.
I wont bite off too much so I'm going to leave you with another five of my personal favourites with that bass that should get the boot and bumper rattling on the hoopty.

Showbiz & AG - Next Level (Nyte Time Mix)

An all time classic album, Incredible production throughout from the baddest mar fuckers in the game. I'm slightly biased with this one as Andre's one of my favourites to ever grace the mic. Premo doing what he does best on this remix. Sample taken from Maynard Ferguson's - Mister Mellow.

Sax, snap backs, bass slaps, and bitches with back. This Clip stinks of the early 90's with bad bomber jackets, leather snap back caps, bitches with perms, heavy chains and pendants and of course Eric B throwin' off his best ice grill.
I think "Paid In Full" should also get a mention but this fretless jazzy bass melody lifted for the track accompanied with the sax and drum break holds a little more weight for me as far as how well pronounced the bass rolls throughout.
No sure were the bass is from on this one sorry.

Taken from the debut LP Ready to die, this being the 1st single. After the little high hat intro with keys and that tight pop and slap bass comes through the break you'll know why I chose this. Sample jacked from the tragic 80's track Juicy Fruit. The 12" features an instrumental remix by Pete Rock. In my opinion the remix comes nowhere close without that bass and drums throughout.

Taken From The Liks 1st LP. This break section notably features on It's My Thing by EPMD off Strictly Business which came out prior to this 93 release. To be honest I'm more a fan of Tash and J-Ro going back and forth on this, plus I think E-Swift is an extremely underrated DJ/Producer.
The track Seven Minutes of Funk has been passed around like a cheap slapper through the hip hop generations. From Kurtis Blow to Gravediggaz, Jay-Z and more recently on Giantz ta thiz from NYGz Album, Welcome to G-Dom with Premo using the same section. The effect on the bass is fucking timeless and catchy as all shit aint it!

Phat Kat feat. Elzhi

Fight music right here. Downtuned and thickened up with a dope progression. I know its not a bass maybe a clavinet? shit is relentless. Dilla's choped it that nice you couldn't even pick it.
As for the spits, Phat Kat murks this withing the first two bars. The power in his voice in that last verse make me want to go out and break something!
I never pick up the lp this was taken from but I've heard mixed reports.

BC/DC stands for the Brisbane Crate Diggaz Co-Op, a group of like minded record enthusiasts who are working towards a greater good for music in this city.

The first fair is to be held on the same day as Weird Gear in APRIL, which is Sunday the 25th (Anzac Day). You should be there if you're a vinyl head already!! But if you haven't checked it out by then, this is your chance...

The event kicks off at 3pm. And dealers will stay until 7 or 8pm. It's FREE entry, and it's a late start, so roll through whenever, it will be chill, no frantic diggin'... browse at your own leisure, in the comfort that is the RUMPUS ROOM. Portable turntables will be supplied with headphones, so if you need to listen, the gear is there... just bring yourself, your duckets and your mind.
The dealers at the fair are hand-picked because they are experts in their own field.... we will only be selling hip-hop, jazz, funk, prog/psych rock, soul, disco and food for the SAMPLERS...

All dealers come from a hip-hop/diggin' perspective and you can ask for what you need... Any requests for certain records or artists, please post them here and the crew will check it out and try bring stuff of that vein... lots of drum breaks, loops, rap singles, hip-hop records, etc. to be found. There will be cheap records, and there will be expensive records. But all of it will be priced reasonably, not eBay or popsike prices.

This shits probably done to death but I felt like posting something a little different to the usual focusing on some of my favourite production in the coming weeks, sharing track's that distinctively stand out from the way the instrument/s have been utilised regardless of the MC. Could be a loop, one shot, live, synthetic or sampled.
You mightn't be a 2pac fan but when you hear California Love you cant front on Dre's production doing up a little eq tweak and lacing that Joe Cocker piano...That's the kinda business were fucking with.

To get shit started I thought I'd share (in no particular order) with my fellow rundown weblors, ten tracks with standout bass lines that punch you straight in the bread basket.

Taken from the 92 classic, Enta Da Stage. This album is gully as fuck. The production from the minerz is incredible! The whole LP has that filthy low end sample based organic sound which came to be that 90's Hip-Hop sound we love. This one being my personal standout with that nice pop bass jacked from the track Hydra performed by Grover Washington Jr (posted below).



M.O.P. - Cold As Ice

This track speaks for itself. Mo-pees on some cold ass thug shit. It could have fallen under a piano keys category but Fizzy's chops and compression pushed on the bass sampled from you guessed it... Cold as Ice by Foreigner make this shit certified body music. You'll find this track on Mash Outs Warriorz album.



Big Punisher feat. Fat Joe - Twinz (Deep Cover 98)

A quality track of Pun's Capital Punishment. I'm favorable to this one a little more than the OG joint Deep Cover 187 by Dre and Snoop. Not sure where this bass is from. It's nothing that technical, just a simple yet effective loop. Its the little two bar intro that always sticks out in my mind and works its magic when the uptempo drum break and little one shots kick in making room for dumb out back 2 back straight spittin.

Bang two bars of this Side Effect original on 45 and mix it with some of that ALC sound you get a certified banger. 80's Soul/Funk with a new lease on life.
Both Capital P and Nas bring their A game to this one on some good vs bad rotten apple story telling biz.

Cage - Radiohead.

Mr. Palko was always a little left of field, this was when he was on the good side of the end zone and not teasing his hear, singing about feelings with pseudo-emo weathermen..Anyways, its not about the rapper its about the bass on the beat. Necro's a beast on the boards. No one can argue he's fallen off either..Peep Gihad off OB4CL2..Shit is fire!!
Here's a down tempo beat with the simple progressive blues riff from the band Ten Years After thickened up with some organ and crunchy synth, works sick under cage's dipped out word play. Still love this track regardless of the above. Not sure what its from maybe an early EC/Fondle Em 12"?

Almost forgot about this little gemstone. Ya'll know Bob James right??A damn fine track here produced by RZA. He's taking this break and giving what could be a guitar a good low boost to make sound more like a bass. Fuck it, shit sounds like a bass to me. Taken from the 96 Classic Ironman.

I could have done 10 tracks on Dre alone but I've settled for one I hold closely from The Chronic. Many a drunken nights in the past and to the day involve a sang of the G thang, sometimes I even alternate from Dre then passing the mic back to my delf so I can bust like a bubble. Chea!
The break a straight jack of Leon Haywood. The bass walk is some straight up G Funk. Need I say more?
